Penguicon 2006 photos
Penguicon 4.0 was one of the most fun conventions I've ever been to. That's saying a lot.

Andrea Dale performs a concert of Filk music.
Concert Audience

Black Sweater Party
Sal Sanfratello of Aegis Consulting stages a roleplaying game of a SWAT team rescue operation.
Buffy The Musical
The finale of a live re-enactment of Buffy The Vampire Slayer the Musical Episode, starring the lovely and talented Rennie, Laura and Anne. Davroz as Sweet the Demon is talented but more "dapper" than "lovely."
Chaos Toy
Howard Tayler supervises the early construction of the Chaos Machine marble rollercoaster.
Chaos Machine progress
Later in the weekend the Chaos Machine marble rollercoaster has become even more elaborate.
Char
This is my new friend Char, a programmer and a Linux enthusiast. She helped me cover a whole hallway's wall with the schedule of the entire weekend of Penguicon.
Coffee Ritual sermon
I am giving the coffee "sermon" at the coffee ritual while Narf and Andrea look on.
Coffee Ritual
The barista of the coffee ritual (me) and the coffee acolytes Andrea and Rachel.

Here is a python named Spot, with my friend Diana.

Convention co-founder Rob Landley and Molly make ice cream with liquid nitrogen.
Espresso liquid nitrogen ice cream
This is a batch of liquid nitrogen ice cream made with a double shot of espresso as the flavoring ingredient!
Serving liquid nitrogen ice cream
Rob and Molly serve the first batch of the very popular espresso-flavored LN4 ice cream to attendees including Bruce Webber, my brother Andy Arnold, me, Manya Newton, and Chris.
liquid nitrogen
Making ice cream with liquid nitrogen covers the floor with cold fog!
Peeps protest

Shay's ribbons
Shay VanZwoll shows off all the badge ribbons she has collected from other Penguicon attendees and stuck to her badge.
Spot with owner
Here is the python, Spot, with its owner.
Stuffed Animal Tea Party
Alison Looney, on the left, threw a tea party for stuffed animals and their friends. Her guests include Mike, whose head can be seen above the bear, Andy Looney at the end of the table with the mouse he carries in his pocket, Shaun Klein and Clark Rodeffer next to him, and on the far right Megan and Moonbeam.
Swan costume
Here is a photo from Penguicon's masquerade presentation. I wasn't there to hear the presentation, but the costume can speak for itself. It says "swan" to me! *Edited to add: says this is her, and the dress is a replica of Bjork's dress from the 2001 Oscars.*
Sword duel: Linda vs. Sal
Linda and Sal duel with practice swords made of PVC pipe, fiberglass tape and foam rubber.
Sword duel: Sal vs. Sean
Sal takes on Sean on the hotel's putt-putt green.
Sword duel: Sean vs. Linda
According to the rules, Sean must stop using a leg if Linda touches it with the practice sword. However, it's possible that this is his fighting stance.
Tom Smith, Frank Hayes in concert
Tom Smith and Frank Hayes perform in the "Unholy Trinity Concert" with Luke Ski.
Willy Wonka
A masquerade entry of Willy Wonka from his fabulous chocolate factory.

Hey *swan* here. It was more or less Bjork's swan dress from the 2001 Oscars. It was my first con and thought it was going to be a good idea. I was positively freezing for 2 hours. I had no idea the masqarade would be that loooooong.

Andrea, it was delightful to meet you. Thank you for your participation and your great talent. "Zen Cappucinno" was the soundtrack in my head most of the weekend! My email is matt.mattarn@gmail.com. Send me the writeup any time, and remember, any more ideas that you have are very welcome.

BTW, it's not "Wood and foam rubber", it's "PVC pipe, fiberglass tape and foam rubber".
That and "boffer swords" are SCA equipment (Aegis!= SCA). It's more appropriate to call Aegis equipment "practice swords".
matt-arnold on Apr. 24, 2006 8:33 PM — Re: Swordfighting captions
I knew Aegis used swords that were highly elaborate, but I didn't realize they were different enough to merit their own terminology. I've edited the caption to reflect this.

Sal has a couple SCA "boffer" swords in the rack at the Haven facility. The difference is night and day. I'll show you my
(p.s. there's a second caption that references "wood and foam rubber")

Actually, some of the advanced students *do* use a wood core, but that's with permission only because it's much easier to break bones that way.
The main difference between "boffers" and Aegis swords is the existence of a flat, unpadded part. It takes more control to use these properly as opposed to the completely round and padded boffer swords that won't hurt if you turn them the wrong way.
Thanks for putting the pictures up; they are all great. :)

Well, maybe it's just me, then. I was thinking that the con, while still very enjoyable, has been coasting downhill since 2.0. Of course, I may be giving 3.0 a bad rap, because I did have a physical ailment during con last year that kept me from enjoying it to its fullest. This year was a lot of fun, and a much needed break from the drudgery of "real life", but all weekend long I was feeling like something was lacking. I didn't see the crazy t-shirts I've grown to expect. I didn't attend masquerade, but that never stopped me from seeing lots and lots of costuems before. This year I saw very few costumes.
